Q & A forum planned on 10% budget cut

Everyone is invited to attend a 10% Budget Cut Q & A Forum, hosted by Education First, on Sat., Feb. 26, at 9 a.m. at George S. Mickelson Middle School. Please pass the word, plan to attend and bring family and friends. All are welcome, from Brookings and beyond.
The event offers an opportunity for dialogue and the sharing of information with Sen. Larry Tidemann, Reps. Scott Munsterman and Spence Hawley, Brookings school district administrators and SDSU President David Chicoine.

Did you know?

• S.D. Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s 10% cut in state education funding = a $1.3 million loss to the
Brookings School District.
• $1.3 million ÷ $45,000 (avg. teacher salary) = 29 teachers
• Daugaard’s 10% cut drops state aid to education $480 per student, from $4,804 to $4,324.
• This 10% cut returns South Dakota education funding to 2006-07 levels.
• District health insurance costs alone have increased $200,000 for 2011-12.
• The school district spends $612,000 each year to provide students with sports, the arts and
other extra-curricular activities.
• We cut $300,000 from the school budget last year to cope with funding shortfalls.
• The Brookings School District already opts out of the state tax freeze for $750,000 a year.
• By law, the state is supposed to give a 1.26% increase in education aid each year. That wouldn’t
even begin to cover this year’s 12% hike in health insurance.
